Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah) came to the defense of Reps. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) and Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) on Friday in a scathing statement against the RNC censuring both lawmakers for serving on the House Select Committee investigating the Capitol insurrection.

The RNC, which is meeting in Utah, is preparing to pass a censure of the two lawmakers because they are helping investigate the events of January 6th instead of bowing down to Donald Trump.

Cheney shamed the RNC on Thursday for such an extreme action. Several Republicans were involved with Trump’s plot to overthrow democracy, so the reaction to Cheney and Kinzinger making the investigation a bipartisan one looks desperate.

Surprisingly, Romney also condemned the RNC on Twitter.

What makes Romney’s statement even more interesting is that his own niece is the RNC chair. Ronna Romney McDaniel struck the Romney from her name on Trump’s demand after the 2016 Election as a way to somehow punish the Romney name after Mitt frequently criticized him. And the RNC chair had no problem turning her back on her own family.

Mitt Romney would go on to win a Senate race in Utah and voted to convict Trump in both impeachment trials, the second of which dealt with his incitement of the insurrection.

Romney’s stand against the RNC is commendable, especially since the corrupt institution could easily retaliate by censuring him. It’s a shame more Republicans are not following Romney’s lead. They are fanatically devoted to Trump, however, and it appears the GOP cannot be saved, nor should it be.

A party that punishes members for not joining in or helping to cover up seditious conspiracy to overthrow democracy and the Constitution has no place in this country. Now if only Romney would help Democrats kill the filibuster so they can protect that democracy with legislation. Until he does that, he’s just another accomplice.
