The RNC officially censured Reps. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) and Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) on Friday for serving on the House Select Committee probing the January 6th Capitol insurrection, and downplayed the attempted coup as “legitimate political discourse.”
Trump supporters violently stormed the Capitol on January 6th in a scheme to overthrow democracy and install Donald Trump as a dictator after he lost the 2020 Election. The insurrectionists assaulted cops, destroyed and stole property, and sought out lawmakers to murder.
Cheney and Kinzinger agreed to serve on the committee after being asked to do so by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) because they were the only two House Republicans who refused to engage in a cover-up for Trump and complicit Republican lawmakers.
Despite condemnations of the censure by Cheney and later by Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and other Republicans, the RNC passed it anyway. In a statement, RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel fanned the flames further by declaring that the insurrection was “legitimate political discourse.”
“Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger crossed a line,” McDaniel said. “They chose to join Nancy Pelosi in a Democrat-led persecution of ordinary citizens who engaged in legitimate political discourse that had nothing to do with violence at the Capitol.”
If anyone crossed a line, it was Trump and Republicans who incited an insurrection to overthrow democracy on January 6th. McDaniel herself has now crossed a line by referring to that violent attempted coup as “legitimate political discourse” when it is nothing of the sort. This endorsement of insurrection is abominable and drew mass condemnation across the country.
This is not legitimate political discourse. pic.twitter.com/sOgWo2S7sR

This wasn’t a noose. Turns out it was just a “legitimate political discourse knot.” pic.twitter.com/ha9agzImQ9

Dear @GOP: You need to apologize for calling the January 6 attack on our nation’s Capitol “legitimate political discourse.”
You are also nuts. https://t.co/DoSZg04AEH

The Republican Party called their violent insurrection on the United States Capitol “legitimate political discourse.”
The GOP is completely broken.

This would be a good time for Republicans who don’t believe that beating the living hell out of cops is “legitimate political discourse” to step up and say so. pic.twitter.com/BrWqTQjUdM

It is now even more important than ever for the Justice Department to prosecute the ringleaders of the insurrection, including Trump and several Republican lawmakers. This is a national emergency that can not be ignored. The American people must demand action and they must vote in November to deny Republicans the majority in the House and Senate. The Republican Party must pay a heavy price for their treason.
