Proving yet again that there’s absolutely nothing former President Donald Trump can do that will cause the majority of Republicans to criticize or condemn him, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) wants us all to relax about the fact that the ex-president took items marked “Top Secret” out of a secure location at the White House and carried them with him to his Mar-a-Lago golf resort in Florida.

Speaking to Bret Baier of Fox News on Monday evening, Rubio was asked why he and other members of the GOP were so outraged by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton using a private email server but are more than willing to give Trump a pass for his actions. The senator responded:

“Well, first of all, I don’t know what’s true and what’s not because they’ve made up so many stories about Donald Trump over the years that, I mean, things that I just knew were flat out untrue.”

Denial. That’s always a favorite for those who try to defend Trump’s indefensible actions.

Rubio then added:

“Nowadays, in the mainstream media, you just need one source to smear Donald Trump, and maybe you don’t even need that. So it’s hard to tell anymore what really happened and what didn’t. The documents that were in Mar-a-Lago by all accounts were turned over.”

Rubio then declared that what Trump did wasn’t even illegal:

“Look, if the process wasn’t followed there, then that there needs to be something that happens about that. It’s not a crime, I don’t believe, but the stuff about flushing paper down the toilet — who knows if that’s even true?”

So in the course of a few seconds, Rubio went from “it’s not true” to “it’s not a crime.” That’s some major-league denial and minimization on display.

Hopefully the Justice Department won’t be as easily swayed as Sen. Rubio.
