Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) attempted to back away from Republican support of Russia and Vladimir Putin on Tuesday by posting a tweet in support of Ukraine. For many, it was too little, too late.
Republicans majorly miscalculated by siding with Putin and Russia against Ukraine at the beginning of the invasion, with Donald Trump leading the praise of Putin at CPAC. But the backlash against Republicans amid the outpouring of support for Ukraine and democracy has forced them to do an about-face. Even Fox News has abandoned their Russian propaganda, at least for the time being.
Stefanik waited until Tuesday morning to finally voice her own support for Ukraine as the country fights for its continued existence as an independent democratic state.
My message to the people of @Ukraine and @ZelenskyyUa: The United States of America stands firmly with you against Russia’s unprovoked and heinous attack on your country. pic.twitter.com/s4d96sWxb2

The problem with Stefanik’s tweet is that she didn’t care about Ukraine when Trump withheld military aid from the country in 2020 in an attempt to extort Ukraine into opening a sham investigation into his political opponents. Trump was impeached for this transgression, which also included repeating Russian propaganda against Ukraine and trying to cover up his crimes. But Stefanik voted against impeachment despite the mountain of evidence against him.
Twitter users reminded Stefanik of this and more as they ripped her for being a hypocrite and a flip-flopper.
The head of your party has praised Putin and his actions. Sit down.

But you still stand with those who made an unprovoked and heinous attack on America’s capitol on January 6th

Abject loyalty to Trump? Check.
Defense of the “perfect call”? Check.
Voted to exonerate Trump in his impeachment? Check.
I don’t know what a human soul goes for on the open market, but Elise sold cheap. https://t.co/oMcghJzD8c

This is especially gross because Stefanik was one of the biggest Trump sycophants during the first impeachment. She covered for his blackmail of President Zelensky and echoed Russian propaganda day after day. https://t.co/N71GLErYua

Condemn Donald Trump then get back to us.

You are the same traitorous fuck who fully supported Trump withholding aide in an attempt to blackmail Zelensky.

Republicans are Russian stooges. That has been made perfectly clear from their own mouths. They don’t get a pass just because they all of a sudden support Ukraine now. They should be punished legally and electorally for sowing the seeds of insurrection here at home and for supporting Putin abroad in their scheme to end democracy. Letting them get away with it should not be an option.
