Senator Mike Braun (R-Ind.) told reporters this week that he would like to see the conservative majority on the Supreme Court overturn past rulings on interracial marriage and contraceptive use, yet again proving that Republicans want to control our personal lives.
Republicans are constantly claiming to be against big government but it turns out they are the party of an even bigger and more authoritarian government. They are already foaming at the mouth over an impending overturning of Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling that protects a woman’s right to choose an abortion.
But now Republicans are apparently taking aim at Loving v. Virginia, the 1967 Supreme Court ruling that legalized interracial marriage, and Griswold v. Connecticut, the 1965 ruling that established privacy of contraceptive use.
During a conference call with reporters, Braun, a sitting Republican senator, said he would support overturning both rulings.
According to The Times of Northwest Indiana:
Braun initially limited his claim to the national right to abortion established by the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision he hopes the current, more conservative, Supreme Court will overturn in coming months when it rules in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. But, when asked by The Times, Braun admitted there are many Supreme Court decisions he believes improperly established federal rights that would be better handled on a state-by-state basis, including Loving v. Virginia that legalized interracial marriage, and Griswold v. Connecticut (1965) establishing a right to privacy concerning contraceptive use.
Overturning both of these rulings would allow red states to ban interracial marriage again and pry into the personal sex lives of citizens, who could be prosecuted for using contraception to prevent pregnancy.
“We’re better off having states manifest their points of view, rather than homogenizing it across the country as Roe v. Wade did,” Braun said. “This should be something where the expression of individual states are able to weigh-in on these issues through their own legislation, through their own court systems. Quit trying to put the federal government in charge.”
Clearly, Republicans are the true party of big government. They want to tell citizens who they can marry and how they can have sex. Keeping them in the government is no longer viable. They are a threat to privacy and freedom across the country. They hate the Constitution. And overturning these rulings is likely just the tip of the iceberg as Republicans will also target past rulings on racial desegregation, same-sex marriage, and more.
It never stops with these people. They want absolute control over our lives and they need to be stopped by any means necessary.
