As Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) continues to hold up crucial Pentagon nominations at a time when Russia is being aggressive toward Europe, Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) took him to the woodshed in an epic floor speech this week.

Republicans are always claiming to be the party of national security and defense, but Hawley has repeatedly demonstrated otherwise by acting as a cog in the nomination process for several important Pentagon appointees, thus weakening our nation’s military effectiveness.

It’s almost as if Republicans actually want to sabotage the Department of Defense for their Russian pals.

Well, Schatz decided it was time to put Hawley in his place by pointing out his hypocrisy and betrayal.

“He is damaging the Department of Defense,” Schatz said. “And this comes from a guy who raised his fist in solidarity with the insurrectionists. And this comes from a guy who, before the Russian invasion, suggested that maybe it would be wise for Zelensky to make a few concessions about Ukraine and their willingness to join NATO. This comes from a guy who just about a month ago voted against Ukraine aid! He’s saying it’s going too slow? He voted ‘no’ — he voted ‘no’ on Ukraine aid and now he has the gall to say it’s going too slow!”

“And coming from a person who exonerated Donald Trump for extorting Zelensky for withholding lethal aid?” Schatz continued. “They withheld lethal aid until, unless Zelensky would release false smears against Joe Biden’s son. And then he voted to exonerate President Trump for this. And so spare me the new solidarity with the Ukrainians and with the free world because this man’s record is exactly the opposite.”

Indeed, Republicans have merely been pretending to support Ukraine recently because their support of Russia and Vladimir Putin has finally backfired. Meanwhile, they continue to aid Russia in Congress by voting against military aid for Ukraine and deliberately sabotaging our own national security all as they work to undermine democracy. Let’s not forget that Hawley helped incite the Capitol insurrection and supported the attempt to overthrow democracy so Donald Trump could remain in power as a dictator and Putin’s top puppet. Clearly, the GOP can no longer be trusted.
