Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) was deeply involved in the scheme to overthrow democracy so Donald Trump could remain in power despite losing the 2020 Election, according to his own text messages sent to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows.
Just hours after the Capitol insurrection on January 6th failed, Lee voted against objections to certifying the electoral vote count, ensuring that President Joe Biden would take office later that month.
The vote helped ensure the transfer of power from Trump to Biden and upheld democracy. But that was only after multiple attempts to overturn the result had already failed, and Lee was involved.
Text messages obtained by CNN reveal that Lee understood that election conspiracies pushed by Trump and his former attorney Sidney Powell were a lie. He also suggested using fake electors from several states to overturn the election for Trump in the Electoral College.
“I’m worried about the Powell press conference,” Lee texted on November 19, 2020. “The potential defamation liability for the president is significant here … For the campaign and for the president personally … Unless Powell can back up everything she said, which I kind of doubt she can.”
“Unless Powell can immediately substantiate what she said today, the president should probably disassociate himself and refute any claims that can’t be substantiated,” Lee continued. “He’s got deep pockets, and the accusations Powell made are very, very serious. That is an especially bad combination when you consider the damages that could easily be claimed (and indeed proven) and the deep pockets involved.”
After Trump’s election lies got him nowhere in court, Lee suggested demanding audits of the vote count.
“I have an additional idea for the campaign,” Lee wrote. “Something is not right in a few states. I think it could be proven or disproven easily with an audit (a physical counting of all ballots cast) in PA, WI, GA, and MI.”
But even hand counts failed to produce the results Trump and Lee wanted. In fact, the recounts showed that Biden actually received even more votes. Even an “audit” of the vote count in Arizona long after Biden had taken office revealed that Trump lost by more votes than he had originally.
When that didn’t work, Lee joined the scheme to send fake electors to Congress and force former Vice President Mike Pence to reject the official electors.
“John Eastman has some really interesting research on this,” Lee wrote. “The good news is that Eastman is proposing an approach that unlike what Sidney Powell has proposed could be examined very quickly. But to do this, you’d have to act very soon. Some believe today might be the deadline for some of this in PA. If a very small handful of states were to have their legislatures appoint alternative slates of delegates, there could be a path.”
Mike Lee relentlessly plotted to overturn the election for Trump. That makes him part of the conspiracy and the Justice Department should immediately indict him. Only when the violent Capitol insurrection failed did Lee try to save face by voting to certify the election. That’s simply not good enough and he needs to be held accountable.
