Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) said the quiet part out loud again on Sunday when he spoke up in defense of unfettered access to guns, telling Fox News that we need them to “take back our government.”

Calls for the passage of gun control laws have been renewed in the wake of the Texas school shooting in Uvalde that left 19 kids and two teachers dead. A majority of Americans still support stricter gun regulations and pressure on lawmakers to make it happen is growing more intense.

Of course, Republicans are refusing to act because the whole lot of them are bought and paid for by the NRA, which callously held a convention just days after the mass shooting. In an example of hypocrisy, the NRA banned guns from the convention for safety concerns.

Republican lawmakers have taken to social media and traditional media to defend guns, with Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Co.) even going so far as to invoke 9/11.

On Sunday, Brooks, who wore body armor on January 6, 2021, the day that he helped incite conservatives to violently stormed Congress in a scheme to overthrow our democracy and install Donald Trump as a dictator, told Fox News that he won’t support new gun laws because we need guns to take back the government.

“The Second Amendment is designed to help ensure that we, the citizenry, always have the right to take back our government should it become dictatorial,” Brooks said. “That was a great fear of the Founding Fathers and, quite frankly, it’s a fear today. And as long as we enjoy infringed Second Amendment rights then we don’t really have to worry that much about the government ever becoming dictatorial. But the moment that we take from our citizenry our ability to take our government back is the moment that the ability of dictatorial forces increases to the point where perhaps they will try to implement a dictatorial government at the federal level.”

Again, Brooks incited an attempted coup to install Trump as a dictator directly against the will of the majority of the American people who elected President Joe Biden. And he is still inciting future insurrections. Some of the insurrectionists are now threatening to bring guns to their next attempt.

Brooks is also conveniently ignoring the part of the Second Amendment that says “well-regulated,” as most conservatives usually do when they invoke it. The reality is that Republicans favor authoritarianism over democracy now. They are the dictatorial threat to our country that we should be concerned about. Brooks’ justification for weak gun laws is even more dangerous when you consider that Republicans cry “dictatorship” every time a Democrat is in the White House.

They are clearly laying the groundwork for future insurrections, making the need for strict gun laws all the more urgent. Republicans like Brooks don’t want to protect guns to defend democracy from dictatorship, they want guns to install a dictatorship and kill democracy.
