Donald Trump is angry at House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) for not having any of his Republican choices on the January 6th Committee, and now some House Republicans are defending McCarthy.

As you may recall, both House and Senate Republicans rejected the formation of an independent commission to investigate the Capitol insurrection and the plot to overturn the 2020 Election.

Despite that setback, House Democrats created a bipartisan committee to conduct an investigation instead. All McCarthy had to do is select acceptable lawmakers who would serve without bias. In the end, McCarthy’s choices were not the cream of the crop. In fact, two of McCarthy’s picks were lawmakers who were going to work to sabotage the committee and act as spies for Trump. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) were both involved in the plot to overturn the election and are potential witnesses and/or accomplices. That’s why House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) rejected them and advised McCarthy to make two other choices.

Rather than simply do that, McCarthy pulled all five of his picks instead and decided to shun the committee. So, Pelosi appointed Reps. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) and Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) to serve. They are the only Republicans on the committee.

Of course, Trump is complaining about that now because he has no defenders on the committee because McCarthy withdrew all of his picks.

And now House Republicans are defending McCarthy from Trump’s attacks.

“Kevin made the only decision he could,” Rep. Kelly Armstrong (R-N.D.) said according to Politico. “What are we going to do? Allow them to just functionally silence entire constituencies? We don’t get good hands all the time in the minority.”

It should be pointed out that McCarthy had five picks to seat on the committee. Armstrong was one of them and Pelosi did not object to her or the other two, only Jordan and Banks because they had clear conflicts of interest. McCarthy could have easily picked two different Republicans to serve.

“Let’s say Kevin says: ‘I’m gonna give you new names,’” Jordan said in defense of McCarthy. “There would have been a problem there. I think she was always going to wind up here because she wanted the partisan show.”

Jordan is lying. Pelosi did not object to the other names McCarthy put forward, only him and Banks. Republicans are acting like snowflakes because they wanted to undermine the committee and the investigation as well as act as advocates and spies for Trump, who would have had a heads up on all the evidence and testimony being presented in the current public hearings.

The House January 6th Committee could have had five Democrats and five Republicans, but McCarthy threw a hissy fit and pulled all of his choices in protest of Pelosi rejecting two of them for damn good reason.
McCarthy’s actions are indefensible and Republicans have only themselves to blame for there being a need for a committee in the first place. They plotted to overthrow democracy and refused to create an independent commission to investigate because they knew how damning such a probe would be. We are literally watching it play out on primetime as the committee reveals the evidence and testimony.

Just imagine how much they will whine when the DOJ finally comes for them.
