The National Rifle Association (NRA) proved just how insensitive and utterly tone-deaf they are when it comes to the subject of gun crime by tweeting out an Independence Day message that came back to haunt them after six people were shot and killed in Highland Park, Illinois during a July 4th parade.
The NRA tweet reads:
“The only reason you’re celebrating Independence Day is because citizens were armed.”
Another pro-gun group, Gun Owners of America, also made a posting that some called worse than the NRA’s:
“This long weekend brought to you by armed citizens.”
This long weekend brought to you by armed citizens. Happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸#WeAreNoCompromise #IndependenceDay #FourthofJuly pic.twitter.com/2BK5koqUrP

Both social media postings drew heavy criticism and reminders that guns are more often used for crime than protection.
The only reason people in Highland Park are mourning the deaths of their loved ones instead of celebrating Independence Day is because of this terrorist organization.

I’m assuming you posted this tasteless tweet before the mass shooting at an Illinois 4th of July Parade. You might want to consider removing it under the circumstances. You know – before your standard “thoughts and prayers” tweet.

I’m sure the citizens of Highland Park appreciate your wishes! BTW, I am a gun owner and have been all my life. Gun ownership brings with it the responsibility for gun safety. The idea that more guns make us safer is a myth. No one needs an AR-15 and a 30 round mag.🇺🇸🇺🇸👋

This tweet aged like a gallon of milk left in a hot car in July.
