Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) once again chose his wealthy pals in the fossil fuel industry over the future of the world by walking away from negotiations that included critical funding to fight climate change.

Democrats currently have a “majority” in the Senate because Vice President Kamala Harris can break 50-50 ties. But Manchin, along with Senator Kirsten Sinema (D-Ariz.), have consistently blocked Democratic legislation because they refuse to kill the filibuster. There are now movements to primary both Democratic pretenders, especially Sinema, who has abandoned every policy goal she once stood for in favor of money from conservative groups and billionaires.

Manchin’s own antics stem from his cozy relationship with Big Coal and Big Oil, even at the expense of his own constituents who desperately need help. And he betrayed them again over the weekend by walking away from climate change funding negotiations.

This drew the ire of Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who slammed Manchin on Sunday for “intentionally sabotaging” the Democratic legislative agenda.

“If you check the record, six months ago, I made it clear that you have people like Manchin, who are intentionally sabotaging the president’s agenda, what the American people want, what a majority of us in the Democratic caucus want,” Sanders told ABC. “The problem was that we continued to talk to Manchin like he was serious. He was not.”

“When Manchin sabotages climate change, this is the future generations what’s going on right now,” he continued. “In the West, all over the world … This is an existential threat to humanity.”

Indeed, Both the United States and Europe face devastating heat waves this week as temperatures climb to well over 100 degrees. The threat of wildfires is high and people are most certainly going to die. This is all while Manchin relaxes on his billionaire-funded yacht. Not only should lawmakers like him be barred from serving in government, but they should also be locked up for willfully letting people die.

The world must seriously tackle climate change, and that means toppling the fossil fuel industry once and for all and charging lawmakers like Manchin with crimes against humanity.
