Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) continued to act like an authoritarian dictator this week by suspending a Democratic county prosecutor so he could install a right-winger in the office despite the fact that the Democrat was elected by the people.

Hillsborough County prosecutor Andrew Warren was elected to the office in 2016 and reelected in 2020. As is usual with prosecutors, they can exercise discretion over what cases they prosecute. But because Warren has expressed his unwillingness to prosecute Floridians who don’t adhere to DeSantis’ tyrannical anti-abortion and anti-LGBT laws, DeSantis suspended him.

The suspension has caused an uproar, especially since Warren is an elected official and DeSantis installed a right-wing judge to replace him. In short, DeSantis overthrew democracy in Hillsborough County to force his dictatorial will upon voters.

“People need to understand this isn’t the Governor trying to suspend the one elected official,” Warren said in response to his suspension. “This is the Governor trying to overthrow democracy here in Hillsborough County.”

Warren also pointed out that he has not had to actually refuse to prosecute a case because no cases have been brought to his attention.

“We’re protecting people’s rights; we have fought so hard for public safety and fairness and justice,” Warren said. “If the Governor thinks he can do a better job, then he should run for state attorney — not President. The Governor wants to do his sideshow with his cronies. I’m the one who’s upholding the law.”

“None of those cases have been brought to us,” he continued. “We’re not anticipating those cases being brought to us.”

Ron DeSantis, just like Donald Trump, is a threat to democracy and freedom. He literally removed an elected official from office so he could install a crony to do his bidding. This is an abuse of power and if anyone should be removed from office, it’s DeSantis.
