Republicans launched a flurry of attacks and threats against the FBI and the Justice Department after Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago was served with a federal search warrant on Monday.

The FBI conducted a legal search and seizure after a federal judge signed off on the warrant. Trump immediately whined about the search and cried persecution even though obtaining a warrant to search his property had to be approved based on strong evidence by the highest levels of our judicial system.

As for what the FBI was looking for, reports indicate that agents were searching for classified documents that Trump illegally took with him when he left the White House in January 2021. The National Archives referred Trump to the DOJ back in February for taking the classified documents.

Of course, Trump accused the FBI and DOJ of “raiding” his “under siege” resort, calling the search “politically motivated,” all of which is false. Trump is not immune from search warrants just because he’s a former president. There had to be evidence of a crime in order to obtain a warrant, and even Trump’s lawyer has conceded that the FBI removed materials from Mar-a-Lago.

Rather than “back the blue,” Republicans attacked and threatened the FBI and Justice Department. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) threw a temper tantrum by calling for defunding the FBI and appeared to incite civil war.

Greene seems to be trying to incite violence and retaliation as if Trump is somehow entitled to break the law. But he’s not. And neither is Greene, who called for the assassination of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and was involved in the January 6th Capitol insurrection.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) responded by threatening Attorney General Merrick Garland directly.

Unlike the perfectly legal search warrant executed at Mar-a-Lago, McCarthy’s threat is true persecution. Republicans intend to abuse their power with impunity if they gain the majority in November. But McCarthy’s threat should backfire since he also has something to hide considering his own shadowy role in the Capitol insurrection and the attempt to overturn the 2020 Election.

Justice will not be served if Republicans control Congress. They literally believe they should be able to commit crimes at will without consequences or accountability. Their hypocrisy is also obvious because while they are falsely accusing President Joe Biden and the Democrats of “weaponizing” the DOJ, they had no problem at all when Trump really was weaponizing it in his effort to punish and persecute political rivals and overturn the election to stay in power.

Americans must deny Republicans the majority in Congress, and it’s time to hold Republicans accountable for their crimes.
