A heckler got an earful Wednesday when he laughed in the middle of a speech being give by Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke (D).

O’Rourke referenced the mass shooting at a Uvalde, Texas elementary school in May that left 19 children and 2 teachers dead, according to Mediaite, complaining that the accused shooter had been able to easily purchase the assault weapons used in the attack:

Speaking at an event, O’Rourke noted the gunman purchased two high-capacity rifles right after his 18th birthday and just days before the shooting.

He said that the rifles were “legally purchased by an 18-year-old who did not try to obtain one when he was 16 or 17, but followed the law that’s on the books, ladies and gentlemen, that says you can buy not one, you can buy two or more if you want to.”

The Texas Democrat added that the AR-15 had been used in the Vietnam War, “That was originally designed for use on the battlefields in Vietnam to penetrate an enemy soldier’s helmet at 500 feet and knock him down dead.”

A man who was later identified as a supporter of incumbent Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott laughed in response to what O’Rourke said, which drew an immediate swat down from the candidate:

“It may be funny to you, motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me, ok?”

Seconds later, O’Rourke noted:

“We’re gonna make sure that our kids who are starting their school year right now, that they don’t have to worry about somebody walking into their school with a weapon like this.”

After the campaign event ended, O’Rourke took to social media:

Reaction on Twitter to O’Rourke’s remarks was immediate:

The latest polls in Texas show O’Rourke is closing the gap between him and Abbott, with Beto only trailing by five percentage points.
