Insurrectionist Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Ga.) obsession with power and retaliation is a big reason why Americans must keep Democrats in control of the House this November.
As the 2022 midterm election approaches, it’s becoming more and more clear that Republicans intend nothing but chaos and vendetta should they capture majority control of the House. In particular, Americans should worry that Greene, who once called for the assassination of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), helped incite the Capitol insurrection on January 6th, and continues to support Donald Trump, could be in a position of power.
Of course, she needs to win re-election, and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) would have to agree to hand her the power she wants. But Greene herself appeared to threaten McCarthy during an interview with the New York Times if he doesn’t give it to her.
According to the report:
“In Greene’s view, a Speaker McCarthy would have little choice but to adopt Greene’s ‘a lot more aggressive’ approach toward punishing (President) Biden and his fellow Democrats for what she sees as their policy derelictions and for conducting a ‘witch hunt’ against former President Trump.”
Indeed, Greene has repeatedly introduced impeachment resolutions against President Joe Biden as revenge for the legitimate impeachments of Trump. In a position of power, Greene could advance her frivolous impeachment schemes. Furthermore, Greene would obviously do anything Trump tells her to do, which means Trump would basically be in charge of the House if Greene has the kind of control she wants McCarthy to give her. And she doesn’t think McCarthy has a choice in the matter.
“I think that to be the best speaker of the House and to please the base, he’s going to give me a lot of power and a lot of leeway,” she said. “And if he doesn’t, they’re going to be very unhappy about it. I think that’s the best way to read that. And that’s not in any way a threat at all. I just think that’s reality.”
It’s absolutely a threat no matter how much Greene insists otherwise. Greene would also undoubtedly pursue retaliation against House Democrats for voting to remove her from committee assignments back n 2021 as punishment for her inflammatory behavior. And you can bet she will push QAnon propaganda.
The House is already disgraced enough via Greene’s mere presence in the chamber. The last thing America needs is Greene in a place of power where her whining would be louder and her actions more damaging to our democracy. All we need to do to prevent it from happening is to either elect her Democratic opponent or deny Republicans the majority.
