Former Vice President Mike Pence (R) openly promised that Republicans would push to pass a national abortion ban if they retake the House and Senate, prompting Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) to respond.

Despite repeatedly claiming that abortion laws should be left to the states to decide, Republicans have since changed their tune since the right-wing judges on the Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade earlier this year. Now that they have managed to ban abortion in several red states, they are giddy about banning it nationwide through legislation, thus abandoning the states’ rights argument and proving it was all a lie.

Obviously, a national abortion ban would oppress women across the country and lead to an increase in mortality rates among pregnant women because abortion is a valid medical procedure in many cases. Not only is abortion necessary to save the lives of women, but it’s also a necessary option for victims of rape and incest. But Republicans don’t care.

Of course, a majority of Americans do care, which is why they support legal abortion by wide margins. Even voters in Kansas voted to protect abortion rights in a clear rebuke of the Republican agenda.

In fact, abortion rights are a losing issue for Republicans, which is why many of them are scrubbing their positions on the subject from their campaign websites and avoiding the issue on the campaign trail in the hopes that voters will forget about it.

Pence, however, undermined that hope this week by promising that Republicans will pass a national abortion ban in response to President Joe Biden’s vow to codify Roe v. Wade into law if Democrats keep control of both chambers of Congress.

Again, this is hypocritical because Republicans claimed that abortion rights should be left to the states to decide. Now they want to force Democratic states to strip women of their reproductive rights.

Ocasio-Cortez told Pence to stay away from women’s uteruses.

Republicans are the most dangerous threat to our democracy and our rights, and they must be stopped.
