Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani has proposed a plan to fight cartel violence in Mexico, which would include a declaration of war and bombing parts of the country in order to create a “safe zone” free of cartels.

Giuliani discussed the plan on his Sunday WABC radio show, saying that if he were advising a president, he would suggest going to Congress to declare war against the cartels and set up a safe zone between the United States and Mexico.

If I were advising a president, I‘d say, come on, let‘s show a pair of cojones here; let‘s go to Congress and have a declaration of war against the cartels,” he said.Let‘s actually declare war against them and say, we‘re gonna go take them out, and we‘re gonna set up a peace zone.”

I‘m gonna set up a safe zone between the United States and Mexico,” Giuliani said, speaking as if he were the president. And when you get control of it, pal, fine. But cartels, get the hell out of the safe zone because I‘m going to bomb the hell out of you.”

Apparently, Giuliani thinks bombs can surgically differentiate the cartels from innocent civilians. Giuliani doesn’t seem to realize that “bombing the hell” out of people tends to create new generations of enemies. Those are lessons we have learned in the Middle East (hopefully).

When those bombs kill mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters who have nothing to do with cartels, those widows and orphans won’t be cheering us on, or “greeting us as liberators” as Dick Cheney foolishly predicted over 20 years ago. No doubt, America can win every battle — but sometimes we do that and still lose the war, or at least prolong it for decades — which only complicates further for more generations.

Sometimes the cure can be worse than the disease.

Giuliani is an unofficial adviser and attorney for former President Donald Trump, who is a candidate in the 2024 presidential election. He also has been one of the biggest spreaders of “the big lie” — making baseless and evidence-free accusations of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election.
