Former Republican National Committee (RNC) chairman Michael Steele slammed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) Tuesday for comments McConnell made in which he suggested that former President Barack Obama was “classless” and should have “kept his mouth shut” instead of criticizing President Donald Trump’s tepid response to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Specifically, President Obama said during a private phone call with former members of his administration that Trump’s handing of the pandemic in the United States had been “an absolute chaotic disaster.”
Those comments led McConnell to tell Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara, in an interview:
“I think President Obama should have kept his mouth shut.
“You know, we know he doesn’t like much this administration is doing. That’s understandable, but I think it’s a little bit classless, frankly, to critique an administration that comes after you.
“You had your shot. You were there for eight years. I think the tradition that the Bushes set up of not critiquing the president who comes after you is a good tradition.”
That was all it took for Steele to light up McConnell on Twitter, posting this:
I’m sure Mitch is aware that a grown ass black man who happens to be a former president has agency to speak his mind on how his successor is managing this crisis, especially since his successor has yet to keep “his mouth shut” about him.
And “classless”?https://t.co/kx6yyH8n4k— Michael Steele (@MichaelSteele) May 12, 2020
And that led to others joining the debate and also chastising the Senate Majority Leader:
It’s not like @senatemajldr is unaware of that.
It’s just that he needed to deflect the criticism of the inaction as well as bad decisions by @realDonaldTrump during this crisis, because he is keenly aware of how his tacit approval of Trump will cost him his seat this November.— Juan Arango (@ModusTollens) May 12, 2020
Surprised McConnell didn’t say “boy”.

Gosh, I wonder if Mitchy has an issue with racism? pic.twitter.com/EWB9nOesEj

Any person who supports Donald Trump never gets to call someone else classless.

Oh, look. Mitch’s racism snuck out from under the rock for all to see.
