Even as some Americans are still receiving their third stimulus payment of $1,4000, support for a fourth stimulus check is starting to gain a significant amount of support in both the House and Senate.
According to Newsweek, 64 members of Congress are urging the Biden administration to make the stimulus payments recurring:
“A group of 11 progressive senators, including Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), earlier this month urged Biden to make stimulus payments and extended unemployment an ongoing thing during the next spending bill.
“‘We urge you to include recurring direct payments and automatic unemployment insurance extensions tied to economic conditions in your Build Back Better long-term economic plan,’ the senators wrote to the president. ‘This crisis is far from over, and families deserve certainty that they can put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads.'”
In the House, 53 members are also making their support for regular stimulus payments known to the White House, with Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) leading the group who also wrote President Biden urging him to consider another round of stimulus checks:
“It was very encouraging to see the inclusion of direct cash assistance in your current economic rescue plan. However it is clear that during this unprecedented time in our nation’s history that we must take additional unprecedented action.”
So far, Biden hasn’t expressed support for more stimulus payments, and the last package was passed on a party-line vote and received no support from Republicans. That legislation was passed via the budget reconciliation process, which only required a simple majority in both houses of Congress to be approved.
However, a fourth round of stimulus would likely face strong opposition from Republicans and would require some support from GOP members to be passed.
Will the support among Congressional Democrats for more stimulus money get beyond the discussion stage? It’s simply too early to tell.
