Ex-Republican strategist Steve Schmidt, who left the party in protest of President Donald Trump, blasted Trump on Monday for being so desperate to win in 2020 that he is willing to spill American blood.
Impeachment and weak 2020 polling have been dominating the news for months, making it less likely that Trump will win a second term as more and more Americans come to understand that he is unfit for office and has not kept any of his promises to help the American people.
Faced with this reality, Trump ordered the assassination of Iranian General Qasem Suleimani, which not only escalated hostilities with Iran, but knocked impeachment off the news cycle.
And now, Trump is sending thousands of troops to the Middle East as he pushes for war with Iran, a conflict that would have a bloody outcome on both sides and would become a new Vietnam War.
During an appearance on MSNBC, Schmidt spoke to his former McCain campaign colleague Nicolle Wallace about the danger Trump is posing to our nation as the 2020 Election approaches.
“We’re in a dangerous hour in this country,” Schmidt said. “This was a major escalation by President Trump. What’s predictable — looking at the Ukraine issue, every issue is he, over and over again acts in his own political interests.”
Two articles of impeachment passed by the House in December charges Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress related to his Ukraine bribery scandal. The strike against Suleimani is a distraction effort as the Senate awaits the articles to begin a trial, which could prove disastrous for Trump if key officials are allowed to testify.
“Looking at impeachment, what he did, for sure, is survey the situation and understood that with this action, with this strike, that he would create a giant smokescreen that clouds and distracts around the issue of impeachment,” Schmidt continued. “This is a political act that has endangered the country.”
He then accused Trump of sacrificing American lives in a desperate ploy to get re-elected, which would help him avoid prosecution for his crimes for another four years.
“And the result of this is a more dangerous world where Americans will be killed that otherwise would not have been killed,” he concluded. “And the consequences will be felt for many, many years and so we’ve moved to the consequences stages having an inept, selfish, boorish, incompetent president of the United States and blood will be spilled, American blood, because of it.”
“I’m just going to let that sink in,” a shocked Wallace responded. “A terrifying thought.”

Trump doesn’t care if he has American blood on his hands as long as he can stay in power. That’s disgusting and every American should be outraged by the president using the troops as pawns for his own political gain. We’re talking about the lives of thousands of Americans, perhaps even tens of thousands. The needless deaths of any number of troops is too high of a price to justify re-electing any president.
