In a welcome bit of good news for once, a new poll shows that Democratic candidate Amy McGrath has taken the lead against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in their Kentucky Senate race.

The race is going to be a dogfight heading into November and is a must-win for Republicans if they want to have any chance of keeping the Senate majority. Should McConnell lose, it seems likely that other dominoes could fall for Democrats in Arizona, Colorado, and other states where the Republican incumbent is incredibly weak and faces a tough Democratic challenger.

So, McConnell could not have been too pleased about a new poll show him losing the race. However, the poll also shows that McGrath’s lead increases drastically when voters are told that she supports congressional term limits.

According to Newsweek:

The polling, which was conducted by RMG Group, shows McGrath, a former Marine fighter pilot, with the support of 41 percent of voters, while McConnell is backed by 40 percent. However, the polling also showed that when voters are informed that McGrath supports congressional term limits while McConnell does not, her lead over the Republican jumps significantly.

With the candidates’ positions on term limits factored in, McGrath was backed by 45 percent of respondents, while McConnell was supported by just 30 percent. But 17 percent of those surveyed were still undecided, and 8 percent said they’d vote for a different candidate.

A 15-point lead is a big deal, which means McGrath may want to keep repeating her support for term limits heading into this next five months of campaigning.

The fact that McGrath is pulling ahead of McConnell is a good sign for Democrats, but McConnell hasn’t exactly been helping himself either unless you count the contracts he’s been able to deliver to friends through his wife, who serves as Secretary of Transportation.

“What this shows is that after 35 years of Mitch McConnell’s partisanship and dysfunction, Kentuckians are ready for change,” McGrath senior communications strategist Terry Sebastian said in a statement. “Lieutenant Colonel Amy McGrath believes in ending lifelong careers in the Senate and strongly supports a limit of two terms. Mitch McConnell has proven that being in office for decades has led to the politics of destruction and the Washington, D.C., swamp that everyone hates.

McConnell’s total support of President Donald Trump and scheme to take over the federal courts is also backfiring against him.

All McGrath needs to do is keep putting the pressure on him and deliver the voters of Kentucky a clear choice heading into Election Day. If they listen, our country could be finally rid of McConnell and that would be a great day for democracy.
