President Donald Trump told a reckless and irresponsible lie late Thursday night that could get more Americans sick and killed by the coronavirus.

So far, over 122,000 Americans have died from the virus, the highest death toll in the world. The next highest country is Brazil with less than half that number.

Trump’s refusal to take action early on and his eagerness to re-open the country earlier than recommended by health experts only exacerbated the pandemic here in the United States.

And Trump continued his effort to lull Americans into a false sense of security by claiming that our mortality rate is one of the “lowest in the world.”

As the New Civil Rights Movement thoroughly pointed out in response, Trump is lying because we actually have one of the highest mortality rates in the world.

“The United States ranks number nine in coronavirus mortality – where number one is the worst in the world,” the publication noted. “Out of 215 countries and territories, we’re number nine. There are 206 nations where statistically you would have a better chance of not dying from coronavirus if you were infected.”

Citing Worldometers, which has kept an accurate tally of deaths around the globe, the New Civil Rights Movement took a screenshot of a graph and circled the relevant statistics.

They even cited Johns Hopkins.

For those who prefer Johns Hopkins’ statistics, the U.S. also ranks ninth in mortality rate, where number one is the worst. Johns Hopkins also offers a “case mortality” rate, meaning of those diagnosed with coronavirus, how many die. There the U.S. ranks 34th. Again, number one is the worst, and there are 215 countries. No matter how you look at the numbers, there is no way the mortality rate in the U.S. is “one of the lowest in the World.”

As you can see, Trump is clearly telling reckless lies about the mortality rate. We have one of the highest in the world, not one of the lowest. People are still getting sick and people are still dying. In fact, the number of cases has shot up in recent weeks because of the early re-openings. And the death toll will likely soon follow.

Once again, Trump appears hell-bent on getting more Americans killed with his reckless ways. It seems that a growing number of Americans believe he must be stopped.
