Eight Senate Democrats committed career suicide by voting against raising the minimum wage, and no one is getting hammered for their vote more than Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.), who is being compared to Marie Antoinette.

In a valiant effort to include a $15 minimum wage with the American Rescue Plan, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) offered an amendment to add it. Unfortunately, eight Democrats joined every single Republican to oppose it. The names of the eight are Senators Joe Manchin (D-W.V.), Jon Tester (D-Mt.) Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Angus King (I-Maine), Tom Carper (D-Del.), Chris Coons (D-Del.) and Sinema.

Calls to primary these lawmakers have since erupted across social media because they have betrayed the working people of this country in a way only Republicans were expected to do. But it’s Sinema who has drawn the most outrage due to the way she voted against the amendment and her hypocrisy in doing so.

A video shows Sinema gleefully voting against raising the minimum wage by giving the amendment an enthusiastic thumbs down.

But that’s not all. Sinema also carried a cake into the Capitol, evoking comparisons to French Queen Marie Antoinette, who allegedly said “Let them eat cake.” in response to her people going hungry. The moment drew a rebuke from the Arizona Republic.

The only thing Sen. Kyrsten Sinema wants to give Arizonans and the nation is ‘cake.’ Forget the $15-an-hour wage or clearing the way for immigration and election reform. Sinema apparently just wants the little people to eat cake. She literally carried a cake to the Senate when she voted against Sen. Bernie Sanders’ proposal to keep the $15-an-hour wage hike in the $1.9 billion COVID-19 relief plan. Her spokesperson later said Sinema brought the cake for Senate staffers who had been working through the night.

Frankly, every Democratic senator who voted against raising the wage deserves the same comparison considering the whole lot of them are wealthy. But Sinema is also a hypocrite because she once voiced support for a $15 minimum wage on Twitter, a position that helped get her elected.

“Marie Antoinette” is now trending on Twitter and this is really bad optics for the Democratic Party. Senate Democrats had the chance to go big and pass really important changes that Americans need. Instead, they have been increasingly spineless as they allow Republicans to have the power as the minority party. These eight Democrats should be aggressively primaried. Beyond that, they should face consequences of some sort for joining Republicans in opposition against a policy that most Americans support. Americans did not give Democrats the Senate majority just to watch them vote like Republicans. If Arizona wanted to send a Republican to the Senate they would have voted for Martha McSally in 2018 instead of Sinema. If Democrats lose the Senate in 2022, they deserve it just as Sinema deserves to have the “Marie Antoinette” label be her legacy.
