Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) had to school ignorant House Republicans this week for not knowing how a woman’s reproductive system works during a hearing on Texas’ new draconian anti-abortion law.

Republicans have tried to defend the law ever since the conservative wing of the Supreme Court allowed it to take effect despite it being plainly unconstitutional.

The law bans abortion after six weeks before most women even know they are pregnant. It has no exceptions for victims of rape and incest, which means victims would be forced to carry their rapist’s baby to term. Furthermore, the law turns anti-abortion fanatics into bounty hunters who can accuse women of having an abortion and sue anyone who aided a woman in getting one. It’s a witch hunt that violates privacy rights and bodily autonomy.

During the hearing, AOC took on the biological misinformation Republicans have been repeating.

“Once again, we’re in a room of legislators who are attempting to legislate reproductive systems that they know nothing about,” she said.

She explained that a woman is considered six weeks pregnant when her period is two weeks late. Under Texas law, it would be too late for a woman to choose an abortion. AOC also pointed out that women miss their periods for a variety of reasons including stress and shock, which often occurs after a woman has been sexually assaulted.

“When you are raped, you don’t always know what happened to you,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “And I speak about this as a survivor. You are in so much shock at what happened to you, sometimes it takes years to realize what actually went on… You look at me funny, I’m two weeks late for my period. And you’re supposed to expect me to know that I’m pregnant? Or the stress of a sexual assault — that makes you two weeks late for your period, whether you’re pregnant or not.”

Ocasio-Cortez then called out Republicans for misrepresenting who can be a rapist.

“This myth, that it’s some person lurking on a street or in a parking lot waiting to sexually assault you, that myth only benefits the abusers in power that want you to think that that’s how it happens,” she said. “It’s your friend. It’s a boyfriend. It’s a boss. It’s a legislator.”

Republicans have built their anti-abortion agenda on lies and misinformation for decades, all while empowering rapists in the process. Their goal is to oppress women and make them submissive to men. It has to be since all they really need to do to reduce the abortion rate is to make contraceptives more accessible as study after study has shown. Of course, Republicans oppose contraception because they want to control women, and that’s what these anti-abortion laws are all about.
