The revelation that several Fox News hosts begged Donald Trump to stop the Capitol insurrection drew criticism from Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) on Tuesday because of the network’s effort to cover it up ever since.

It turns out that Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, and Brian Kilmeade all sent text messages to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows during the violent storming of the Capitol begging Trump to put an end to it. Meadows’ texts were read aloud by Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) on Monday, making it clear that the White House knew what was going on and did nothing about it for three hours.

But while the Fox News hosts begged Trump to stop the violence, the network has spent every day since trying to cover it up. That’s why McGovern took Fox News to task in remarks on Tuesday.

“I think that it’s notable that as of the start of the meeting that there has been zero mention on Fox News of their hosts’ texts to Mark Meadows, the texts that Ms. Cheney read last night at the Select Committee’s meeting,” McGovern said. “Not one. And that despite the fact that one of the hosts that texted him was live on the air all morning.”

“But what I’m upset about is that what they’ve publicly said ever since, that what happened that day somehow wasn’t the fault of Donald Trump and his allies, that what happened really wasn’t a big deal, that all this is being over-hyped,” McGovern continued. “This would be a good time for these hosts to use their platforms to tell the American people the truth, just like they were privately texting Mark Meadows the truth on that terrible day, that the president’s inaction hurt us all, that he should have done more, that he should have pushed to stop the violence. But I have to say that their silence is deafening.”

Indeed, the silence is deafening. It also makes Fox News culpable. The network spent months pushing Trump’s election lies and violent rhetoric, therefore helping to incite the insurrection via propaganda. Fox News has known all along that the Capitol insurrection was a violent threat to our democracy and they have been engaged in a cover-up for Trump and the GOP. This warrants an investigation, and the network should be shut down for continuing to be a threat to our democracy and Constitution.
