Speaking to a group of GOP donors in New Orleans on Saturday evening, former President Donald Trump said he had the perfect solution to the Russian invasion of Ukraine: Have the United States label its planes with the Chinese flag and then watch as the two countries go to war with each other.

“And then we say, China did it, we didn’t do it, China did it, and then they start fighting with each other and we sit back and watch.”

The speech, which went on for 84 minutes, according to the Washington Post, featured several mentions of foreign policy and also included Trump’s usual whining that the 2020 election had been “rigged,” though he has failed to present a shred of credible evidence to support such an allegation.

Instead of slamming Russian President Vladimir Putin, however, Trump attacked President Joe Biden and also praised North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un:

“I knew Putin very well. He would not have done it. He would have never done it,” Trump said, without mentioning that, as president, he held up military aid for Ukraine as he pushed the country to investigate Biden’s son Hunter.

He espoused praise for North Korea’s brutal leader, marveling at how Kim’s generals and aides “cowered” when the dictator spoke to them. “Total control,” Trump said of how Kim ran the country, describing generals snapping to attention and standing up on command.

“His people were sitting at attention,” he added.

“I looked at my people and said I want my people to act like that,” he said to laughter.

The ex-president’s remarks led to a great deal of discussion and criticism on Twitter:
