A federal judge took aim at Republican leaders this week for being too frightened of Donald Trump to stand up to him and his election lies.

Trump has been peddling election conspiracy theories ever since President Joe Biden beat him in November 2020. The disgraced ex-president, who is now under investigation for violating the Espionage Act due to his unlawful possession of hundreds of classified documents, contends that the election was somehow rigged and that he’s the true winner. This is despite losing 60 court cases because he provided zero evidence of fraud and multiple recounts in several swing states showing accurate tallies.

The lies have been so pervasive that Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, in an attempt to overthrow democracy and keep Trump in power. They have since continued to threaten future insurrections.

It’s an assault on democracy that Republicans have refused to condemn because they fear their own voters will punish them for standing up to Trump and calling out his lies. Of course, several Republicans have willfully gone along with Trump’s scheme. For those who are terrified of calling him out, however, Judge Amy Berman Jackson sent a special message to them during the sentencing hearing of a January 6th insurrectionist.

According to Politico:

“U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson said former President Donald Trump had turned his lies about the election into a litmus test for Republican candidates and that ‘high-ranking members of Congress and state officials’ are ‘so afraid of losing their power’ that they won’t contradict him. That fealty, she said, comes even as law enforcement and judges involved in cases related to the former president are facing unprecedented threats of violence.”

“In addition, Jackson said, Trump and his allies are using rhetoric about the multiple criminal probes connected to Trump that contain dangerous undertones.”‘Some prominent figures in the Republican Party … are cagily predicting or even outright calling for violence in the streets if one of the multiple investigations doesn’t go his way,’ Jackson said.”

Republicans cannot be trusted to defend democracy. They are either loyal to Trump like good little toadies or they are too scared of him to speak out. It’s time for the party to be destroyed before it destroys the country for Trump.
