Former Vice President Mike Pence took his 2024 Presidential bid to Sioux City, Iowa on Wednesday. He held a campaign event there where a MAGA voter confronted him about his authority to challenge the 2020 election results and send them back to the states for “further review.”

Pence had no such authority, as the Constitution is clear. Pence was authorized to hear any objections from members of Congress, which he did, he did not have the authority to go farther than reading and counting the votes.

Pence only really needed 10 words to shut down the MAGA voter but he went further, leaving no doubt that Pence did the right thing on January 6th, 2021.

“Don’t take my word for it, go read the Constitution.” Pence told the crowd and the MAGA voter.

Pence also presented the audience with the straight facts.

Pence said that after Election Day, 60 lawsuits were filed to review the results in various key states that decided the election. He said some “election irregularities” happened (as they do in almost every election, big and small) and explained that some of them occurred where states expanded voting by mail in response to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“At the end of the day, when Iowa certified your results and sent them to Washington, D.C., when Indiana certified our results — the Constitution of the United States, in Article II, it’s the job of the vice president is to serve as the presiding officer of a joint session where you open and count the votes,” he said.

Pence also told the voter that some have misunderstood the law and the Constitution, and added,  “I know by God’s grace I did exactly what the Constitution of the United States required of me that day,” he said. “I kept my oath.”

Where that is clear to most Americans, some still insist on imagining a scenario where Pence could have stopped the certification process. They have to imagine it, because such a process does not exist in the Constitution. Pence did keep his oath. Unfortunately, for his boss, Donald Trump, Jack Smith and others are still investigating whether or not he kept his oath on January 6th, 2021. Many believe he did not.
