President Donald Trump thought he’d try to settle some old scores on Friday evening, tweeting out a nasty attack on his former attorney general, Jeff Sessions, who is seeking to regain his Alabama Senate seat but facing stiff opposition in a GOP primary runoff.
Trump was endorsing several Republicans on social media Friday when he posted a tweet accusing Sessions of letting the country down because he allowed the “Fraudulent Mueller Scam” to happen:
3 years ago, after Jeff Sessions recused himself, the Fraudulent Mueller Scam began. Alabama, do not trust Jeff Sessions. He let our Country down. That’s why I endorsed Coach Tommy Tuberville (@TTuberville), the true supporter of our #MAGA agenda! https://t.co/pCi7jftce2 https://t.co/sAn1VbxNwc

A few hours later, however, Sessions responded to Trump’s angry tweet, and he let the president know that he had done what was right when he recused himself from overseeing the Russia probe:
3 years ago, after Jeff Sessions recused himself, the Fraudulent Mueller Scam began. Alabama, do not trust Jeff Sessions. He let our Country down. That’s why I endorsed Coach Tommy Tuberville (@TTuberville), the true supporter of our #MAGA agenda! https://t.co/pCi7jftce2 https://t.co/sAn1VbxNwc

And while he was at it, Sessions also aimed some barbs at his opponent in the GOP primary, former college football coach Tommy Tuberville:
Tuberville’s a coward who is rightly too afraid to debate me. He says you’re wrong on China & trade. He wants to bring in even more foreign workers to take American jobs. That’s not your agenda and it’s not mine or Alabama’s. I know Alabama. Tuberville doesn’t.

Others also joined the fray between Trump and Sessions:

Be grateful Jeff. A Twitter slam from tRump is something to be proud of. #FreshTweets#BeTheChange4USA https://t.co/fBLvel1dvp

poor Jeff Sessions can’t catch a break — too racist to be a Reagan-era judge, and not racist enough to head Trump’s department of justice

The runoff election will be held on July 14. The winner will face incumbent Democratic Senator Doug Jones in November.
