President Donald Trump thought he’d try to settle some old scores on Friday evening, tweeting out a nasty attack on his former attorney general, Jeff Sessions, who is seeking to regain his Alabama Senate seat but facing stiff opposition in a GOP primary runoff.

Trump was endorsing several Republicans on social media Friday when he posted a tweet accusing Sessions of letting the country down because he allowed the “Fraudulent Mueller Scam” to happen:

A few hours later, however, Sessions responded to Trump’s angry tweet, and he let the president know that he had done what was right when he recused himself from overseeing the Russia probe:

Others also joined the fray between Trump and Sessions:

The runoff election will be held on July 14. The winner will face incumbent Democratic Senator Doug Jones in November.
