During the impeachment hearings being held by the House Judiciary Committee, few Republicans on the committee have been as out of control and even hysterical as Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA), who has repeatedly engaged in outbursts and anger that seems little more than a calculated theatrical performance.

On Thursday, Collins even got up and walked out during the markup of articles of impeachment, which led some to suggest he was merely trying to distract from the evidence against President Donald Trump:

Former Republican political strategist Rick Wilson, author of the book Everything Trump Touches Dies, told MSNBC host Brian Williams he’s had quite enough of Collins and his play acting, remarking on “The 11th Hour”:

“I don’t want to say that Doug Collins is a screeching, histrionic drama queen, because that would insult screeching, histrionic drama queens, but this whole thing is a bad faith effort, performative in every way.”

Wilson then added:

“Every one of these guys on this committee, they’re out there waving their junk around to the maximum possible degree to distract from the fact that the president committed crimes, high and otherwise, in the course of trying to extort a foreign power to manipulate a United States election.”

Republicans cannot possibly defend the many unethical and potentially illegal actions of this president, so they try and distract us with angry rants and ridiculous assertions that only serve to prove their own desperation.

As Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin explained earlier this month:

“Despite a spate of motions and points of order, Republicans did little to conceal the essential point of the hearings, namely to demonstrate that the facts produced so far scream out for impeachment as a remedy. Otherwise, as Professor Noah Feldman put it: ‘If we cannot impeach a president who abuses his office for personal advantage, then we we no longer live in a democracy. We live in a monarchy, or we live under a dictatorship.’ Republicans simply do not care if that is the result. Their sole concern is protecting the leader of their cult.”

The cult of Trump is only too happy to trample on truth and obscure high crimes and misdemeanors if it helps them retain political power. That alone is reason enough to vote every single one of them out of office.
