If Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) paid any attention to the voter turnout during the South Carolina Democratic primary on Saturday, he may have seen his political career flash before his eyes. And just in case he didn’t, his Democratic opponent made sure to give him the bad news on MSNBC.

Former Vice President Joe Biden won his first victory in the Palmetto State over the weekend by a landslide thanks to the massive turnout by black voters, which took many, including Jaime Harrison, by surprise.

Harrison is challenging Graham for his Senate seat in November, with Graham barely hanging on to a slim one-point lead in the polls thus far.

But if the same turnout on primary day repeats on Election Day in November, Graham could be staring at certain defeat.

During an interview on the cable news channel, MSNBC on Sunday, Harrison pointed out just how surprising the voter turnout was and why Graham should be frightened.

“I was a bit surprised,” Harrison said. “But the thing that really surprised me, Joy, was the turnout numbers here in South Carolina. We almost eclipsed — we’ll get the final word maybe today or tomorrow — the historic turnout we saw in the 2008 election with Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards. I never thought we would get that close, we far surpassed what we saw in 2016.”

Indeed, it appears that Democrats are more energized than ever in the effort to dump Trump and his lackeys. Voters cast 80,000 absentee ballots this year, around 30,000 more than were cast in 2016. In addition, the total number of votes cast went beyond the 500,000 cast in 2008.

Harrison argued that Graham should be shaking in his boots about now over those numbers on the cable news channel.

“The person who should be — probably had nightmares last night — is Lindsey Graham because the turnout, particularly in some of these traditionally Republican counties was unbelievable,” he said. “It says to me that this new south is emerging and as I’ve been saying so much, South Carolina is going to be the tip of the spear.”

If Graham loses in November, he will only have himself to blame. He has had multiple chances to stand up to Trump, only to twist himself in knots to support him even when it exposes him as a hypocrite. The people of South Carolina deserve a senator who isn’t a spineless sycophant. That’s why Harrison should be their guy.
