President Donald Trump has enjoyed certain protections and tolerance from Twitter over the last four years, but that’s all about to change.

As we all know, Twitter has reluctantly allowed Trump free reign on his personal account, so he has been able to bully others, spew hate, and tell lies over the last four years and get away with it. Only recently has Twitter begun slapping some of his tweets with disclaimers, which is basically a slap on the wrist.

Frankly, a personal account, even one that belongs to a president, should not be exempted from Twitter’s rules that govern everyone else. But the social media platform exempted his account anyway and he has used it as a bullhorn nearly every day, including against Twitter itself.

However, Trump will no longer be president on January 20, 2021 when President-Elect Joe Biden takes the oath of office. Therefore, Trump will automatically lose this exemption and his Twitter account faces suspension or deletion for violating the standards that the rest of us are forced to abide by.

“Twitter’s approach to world leaders, candidates, and public officials is based on the principle that people should be able to choose to see what their leaders are saying with clear context,” a Twitter representative told The Verge. “This means that we may apply warnings and labels, and limit engagement to certain tweets. This policy framework applies to current world leaders and candidates for office, and not private citizens when they no longer hold these positions.”

Just think, one day soon we could all wake up and Trump’s Twitter is gone. We will no longer have to worry about him spreading misinformation with the click of a button. We won’t have to worry about him inciting violence. And we won’t have to wonder what he is pathetically whining about because his account will be suspended or will no longer exist.

Again, Twitter should have suspended or deleted his account the first moment he violated Twitter rules. The platform could have spared this nation a lot of grief over the last four years by doing so and they failed. That being said, they had better punish him accordingly starting January 20th because we all know he is going to act like the rules don’t apply to him and he is a threat to the national healing that needs to take place after his disastrous and divisive presidency.
