On Friday, the last speaker of the day at the annual Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) convention was Donald Trump Jr., son of the former president, but based on how Don Jr. was received by the audience, it certainly appears that the Trump name isn’t as thrilling to right wingers as it once was.

According to David Badash of The New Civil Rights Movement, there were lots of empty chairs for Junior’s speech, and reaction to what he had to say was muted and even cold:

“The conservative crowd did not seem terribly impressed or thrilled with Trump Jr.’s remarks. At one point, when he compared CNN’s chief media correspondent Brian Stelter (who he called Brian Slettler) to “Mr. Potato Head,” claiming that everyone makes that comparison (almost no one makes that comparison, except for this guy and a Fox News host), he got enough pushback that he had to try to defend his ugly attack.”

There were also the obligatory (and pathetic) “jokes,” most of which fell flat:

“Liz Cheney is less popular than her father is at a quail hunt,” referring to the former vice president accidentally shooting an acquaintance in the face – in 2006, 15 years ago. There likely were attendees in the room who literally were too young to know what he was talking about. When some groaned he declared, “fact check: true.”

Not bad enough? Don Jr. also doubled down on a line he’s been using for weeks now: That The Muppets were banned by Disney in an attempt to be politically correct, even though that’s not even remotely true:

“This month, this month alone, they’ve banned The Muppets. Right. I mean, if there’s things that you thought were sort of above cancellation, you would be wrong. There is nothing, the radical left won’t cancel.”

The real truth? Disney pulled two episodes of The Muppets, one because they were unable to obtain the music rights and the other due to the fact that the host of an episode was busted for possession of child pornography. Both valid reasons, but Junior glossed right over the truth, which is clearly a habit he inherited from his father, a pathological liar.

On Sunday, the one-term failed president who also happens to be Don Jr’s father will end the CPAC conference with a speech of his own. Maybe he can invite Kermit the Frog onstage with him and try to pretend he has the little green guy’s endorsement.
