While Republicans stick to doing nothing but offering “thoughts and prayers” after mass shootings that once again used assault weapons, President Joe Biden is taking action that would actually do something to curb the gun violence epidemic in our country.

A combined 18 people are dead after mass shootings in Colorado and Georgia over the last week, sparking renewed calls for stronger background checks and a ban on assault weapons. Republicans have offered their standard “thoughts and prayers” response while insisting that now is not the time to discuss policy to prevent gun violence.

Well, Biden doesn’t want to discuss policies either, he wants Congress to pass them right now so he can sign them into law.

“I don’t need to wait another minute, let alone an hour, to take common-sense steps that will save lives in the future and I urge my colleagues in the House and Senate to act,” Biden said in a statement at the White House on Tuesday. “We can ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in this country once again. I got that done when I was a Senator. It passed, it was law for the longest time. And it brought down these mass killings. We should do it again. We can close the loopholes in our background checks.”

Biden is right. The Federal Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 prevented these kinds of mass shootings, which only skyrocketed after Republicans let the law expire in 2004. A majority of Americans, including most gun owners, support a ban along with stronger background checks. Congress needs to pass these policies now, even if it means Democrats have to kill the filibuster in the Senate to do it. People are being killed, and Republicans don’t care about stopping it. So, it falls to Democrats to do what needs to be done to save lives.
