Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) threatened corporations with regulations and tax hikes for opposing GOP voter suppression laws and siding against Republicans on several social issues.
Many corporations, including Major League Baseball and Delta Airlines, have taken a stand against the new Jim Crow voter suppression law Georgia Republicans passed last month. Instead of moving to repeal the law, however, Republicans moved to punish Delta and are trying to punish Major League Baseball for defending democracy.
Now Rubio has written an op-ed in the right-wing rag New York Post threatening corporations with punishment if they don’t support Republican policies.
“No policymaker would allow a company to dump toxic waste into a river upstream of a thriving town he is charged with governing,” Rubio ironically wrote since his party unequivocally supports and enables polluters. “Yet corporate America eagerly dumps woke, toxic nonsense into our culture, and it’s only gotten more destructive with time. These campaigns will be met with the same strength that any other polluter should expect.”
“Our nation needs a thriving private economy,” Rubio continued. “And patriotic business leadership has historically underwritten the American Dream. But lawmakers who have been asleep at the wheel for too long, especially within my own party, need to wake up. America’s laws should keep our nation’s corporations firmly ordered to our national common good.”
In other words, Republicans will pass laws to punish any corporation that doesn’t support their crusade against democracy and their culture wars.
Rubio’s threats drew condemnation and mockery on Twitter.
I don’t know but as Speaker of the Florida House Marco Rubio denied allocation of funds to deal with the looming Piney Point toxic waste dump and several years later it started leaking, polluting groundwater and forcing 315 families to evacuate so he knows plenty about that topic https://t.co/u7Jolxj906

Government should FORCE private companies to support something called a “national common good?” Sounds like Socialism @marcorubio. https://t.co/nSbyJKr6ad

So you’re mad that corporations listen to their employees, share profits with shareholders, limit hate speech, and care about oppression in our society? If that’s the case, I’m thinking the corporations might not be the problem in this case.

We vote in the booth. We vote with our paychecks at business. But now the GOP wants to decide both for you. They will pick the voters and they will pick the companies. Is this the America you want to live in?

Republicans want our nation to become an authoritarian dictatorship. That’s literally what Rubio supports. They’ve been working to suppress voters for decades and now they are threatening to suppress corporations. That obliterates their claim to be all about the free market and capitalism. And demonstrates that Rubio and every other Republican needs to be ousted from public office.
