Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) accused the military of being too “woke” and complained about the study of critical race theory during a hearing in Congress on Wednesday only to be humiliated by General Mark Milley, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Republicans have chosen critical race theory and wokeness as their new culture war targets as they desperately try to cover up systemic racism in our past and in the present day. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) recently claimed that the U.S. military is inferior to the Russian military because of inclusiveness.

It’s an insult that Gaetz, who is being investigated for sex trafficking an underage girl, repeated this week. Milley is a highly decorated Army officer who served in the 82nd Airborne and has a Master’s degree in international relations. And so, when Milley responded to Gaetz’s accusation, he owned him by arguing that our troops should be well-read and should understand our history and other points of view.

“I’ve read Mao Tse Tung. I’ve read Karl Marx. I’ve read Lenin. That doesn’t make me a communist,” Milley said. “So what is wrong with understanding, having some situational understanding about the country for which we are here to defend? I want to understand white rage — and I’m white. What is it that caused thousands of people to assault this building and try to overturn the Constitution of the United States of America?”

Indeed, Republicans have refused to allow the creation of an independent commission to investigate the January 6th Capitol insurrection, most likely because many of them were involved in the scheme to overthrow democracy.

Rather than demand answers about that terrorist attack by Trump supporters, Republicans are conducting a witch hunt against the military instead in opposition to diversity and inclusiveness in a blatant effort to keep institutional racism alive and well. Milley was not amused.

“I personally find it offensive that we are accusing the United States military … of being ‘woke’ or something else because we’re studying some theories that are out there,” Milley said as Gaetz shook his head in embarrassment.
