Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) threatened to flee Washington DC if it means blocking a major infrastructure bill from passing even as his state is in desperate need of funding to repair roads.

Democrats have unveiled a massive infrastructure bill that is long overdue and will meet the needs of our aging roads and bridges while attending to human infrastructure needs and bring other infrastructure up to date in an effort to fight climate change.

The nation needs this funding and an overwhelming majority of Americans support it because it will also create jobs. South Carolina especially needs it since the state has the worst roads in the country, and residents are paying more in taxes than they would have to pay if the federal government chipped in.

But Republicans refuse to support the bill because they don’t want President Joe Biden to succeed in improving the nation. That includes Graham, who appeared on Fox News on Sunday and threatened to leave town to deny Democrats a quorum in the Senate so the bill can’t be voted on.

“You’ve got to have a quorum to pass a bill in the Senate,” Graham said. “I would leave before I would let that happen. So, to my Republican colleagues, we may learn something from our Democratic friends in Texas when it comes to avoiding a $3.5 trillion tax and spend package. Leave town.”

“Hell yeah, I would leave!” Graham doubled down. “I will use everything lawfully in my toolbox to prevent rampant inflation, a $3.5 trillion infrastructure package that’s got nothing to do with infrastructure, that is a tax and spend dream of the socialist left.”

In fact, the bill has everything to do with infrastructure. Republicans simply just don’t care about the country or the American people. They only care about themselves and retaking power.

“If it takes me not showing up to stop that, I will do it,” he continued. “Because if we pass that bill, you’re going to have inflation through the roof. And if they put legalizing illegal immigrants in that bill, you’re going to have a complete run on the border.”

The problem with Graham’s threat is that Texas Democrats can’t be arrested in Washington DC by Texas law enforcement for fleeing the state. It should also be pointed out that the US Senate only requires a simple majority to conduct business, something Democrats currently maintain. And even if Senate Republicans were required for a quorum, Graham and his colleagues could potentially be arrested by federal law enforcement anywhere in the country and brought back to Congress. They would have to flee the country entirely, not just Washington DC, and that would only make them look worse in the eyes of an already disapproving public.

Furthermore, Republicans spent fours years not getting anything done other than giving trillions of dollars in tax cuts to the wealthy and corporations all while breaking their promise to deliver infrastructure legislation. Their refusal to fix our infrastructure has only made the situation more expensive to deal with. It’s time to get this done and Democrats have a good bill that will do it. South Carolina should tell Graham to support it unless the state really wants to be known for having the shittiest roads and the shittiest senator in the nation.
