After Donald Trump took the rally stage in South Carolina to attack Rep. Tom Rice (R-S.C.) for voting in favor of impeachment for inciting the Capitol insurrection, Rice fired back in some of the strongest remarks a GOP lawmaker has made about the wannabe dictator.

Rice was one of just ten House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump in the wake of the January 6th coup attempt to overthrow democracy. Trump supporters rushed from a rally Trump had spoken at to violently storm the Capitol and keep him in power.

The evidence of Trump’s treason against the nation and the Constitution was clear at the time, and it’s even more clear now. Rice stood up to Trump for democracy that day. But now Trump wants revenge, and he started by slandering Rice at a rally in South Carolina and telling voters to oust Rice as well as Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) in favor of Trump’s handpicked GOP cult members.

“Thankfully this June you have a chance to dump these grandstanding losers and replace them with two rock-solid America-first champions,” Trump said after referring to them as “fools” and “RINOs” in his usual bullying way.

Rice didn’t let Trump get away with the attack like other Republicans would likely do. Instead, he hammered Trump into the ground.

“If you want a congressman who supports political violence in Ukraine or in the United States Capitol, who supports party over country, who supports a would-be tyrant over the constitution, and who makes decisions based solely on re-election, then [Trump endorsee] Russell Fry is your candidate,” Rice responded in a statement. “Trump is here because, like no one else I’ve ever met, he is consumed by spite. I took one vote he didn’t like and now he’s chosen to support a yes man candidate who has and will bow to anything he says.”

While most Republicans are cowering before Trump, it’s good to know that there are still at least a few who have actual dignity and put the country first.
