Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was raked over the coals during testimony before the House Education Committee this week, and what she was told by a member of the committee serves as a reminder that DeVos and the Trump administration are clearly in the pocket of big business at the expense of the American consumer.

Rep. Josh Harder (D-CA) told DeVos that her actions regarding for-profit universities had already cost one of his constituents $40,000:

“After being ordered by a federal court to stop collecting debts from cheated Corinthian students, you ignored the order and kept stealing money from these students. You were even held in contempt of court because of it.

“You’re not standing up for them, you’re working for the schools that defrauded them.”

Harder also noted that DeVos, as a billionaire heiress, doesn’t understand the financial situation of most Americans, telling her:

“Maybe it doesn’t sound like a lot to you because it is only one-tenth of one percent of one of your family’s ten yachts.

“So I guess I just have one question for you Secretary DeVos, are you deliberately violating this federal court order because you are too corrupt to uphold the law or because you are too incompetent to do your job?”

The chairman of the committee, Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA) stepped in to criticize Congressman Harder for impugning the character of the witness. And that led DeVos to whine that she “took great personal offense at everything you just said.” She then added:

“I don’t need to sit and listen to what you just spewed out your mouth.

“I did not defy any court order.”

That, however, is not the least bit true. U.S. taxpayers are on the hook for the $100,000 fine imposed on DeVos for defying the order of a federal judge, as journalist Kurt Eichenwald notes:

Everywhere you look in this administration, the people who are supposed to be serving the public are instead enriching themselves and their friends. But when they get caught red-handed they lie through their teeth. No wonder the majority of Americans don’t believe a thing the current president says.
