As Senate Republicans continue to refuse calling witnesses Democrats have been asking for during the impeachment trial, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) dared them to call Hunter Biden since they have the votes to do so.
Despite the ineptness of President Donald Trump’s legal defense team and his weak case against impeachment, not to mention the devastating case for removal presented by the House managers, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and the GOP still intends to acquit him in what amounts to a cover-up.
The case for removal would be even stronger if Senate Republicans agreed to call chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and former National Security Adviser John Bolton to testify. But they won’t because they know such testimony would make it even harder for them to acquit while increasing the number of Americans who support conviction and removal.
At the same time, Trump is demanding Hunter Biden be called to testify, but Senate Republicans don’t even want to call him to testify anymore, which is why Schumer made an appearance on Morning Joe Friday to goad Republicans into using their votes to call Biden.
“This is the first time probably a majority of Republicans have heard the whole case start to finish,” Schumer said. “They’ve heard bits and pieces. Many of them hear it on Fox News, and we know what Fox News does. They leave out the most damning parts against the president, and they even distort some of them.”
“I started four weeks ago on this campaign for witnesses and documents, when I sent a letter to McConnell,” he said. “I called (House Speaker) Nancy (Pelosi) that night and said I’m going to do it. She said, great — she agrees, and I’ve been pleasantly and strongly surprised how much support this is getting.”
An overwhelming majority of Americans want the Senate to hear witness testimony.
“Let me just say this,” Schumer continued. “The witnesses that we have asked for are eyewitnesses, like Mick Mulvaney, to everything that happened, and the few Republicans, there are some, who are saying, ‘Well, I don’t know if this is all really true, it’s all secondhand,’ which it isn’t, but still, every one of these witnesses, these documents, will answer this directly. Hunter Biden has nothing to do with this.”
Schumer then pointed out that Republicans can’t blame Democrats for Hunter Biden not testifying because they have the votes to call him, and he dared them to do so.
“By the way, and people forget this,” Schumer said. “The Republicans could call Hunter Biden on their own, they have 53 votes. You know why they don’t? Because they know that will just confirm to every American that everything the president is doing has done in this whole sad saga, everything the president’s lawyers are doing, everything the Republican senators are doing is just political.”

Hunter Biden and his father former Vice President Joe Biden have been cleared by prosecutors of any wrongdoing in Ukraine. If he’s called to testify, Republicans know he would expose their conspiracy theory with millions of Americans watching.
If Republicans seriously believed Trump was merely fighting corruption in Ukraine, they would call Hunter Biden. But they know full well that Trump abused his power, so they will oppose anything that threatens to derail their sham trial.
