President Donald Trump once again proved that he is an unrepentant racist this week by ordering the end of anti-racism training for federal employees.

Critical race theory is a social sciences movement designed to combat the systemic racism that has plagued our country and our government and law enforcement agencies for centuries. Developed and adopted by many major law schools, the theory hypothesizes that white supremacy and racial power are maintained over time and that the law could play a role in this process.

Indeed, we’ve seen how white supremacy has infiltrated the ranks of police over the years and white supremacy has certainly been part of local, state, and federal government. That’s why this anti-racism training exists, so we can root it out and end the systemic racism that has led to unequal enforcement of the law, the shooting of unarmed black people by police, and the under-representation of people of color.

But now Trump is stripping funding from that training and ordering all federal agencies to end it, all while referring to such training as “anti-American propaganda.”

Seriously.

“It has come to the President’s attention that Executive Branch agencies have spent millions of taxpayer dollars to date “training” government workers to believe divisive, anti-American propaganda,” the White House said in a statement. “According to press reports, employees across the Executive Branch have been required to attend trainings where they are told that ‘virtually all White people contribute to racism’ or where they are required to say that they ‘benefit from racism.’”

Except white people DO benefit from racism. That has been clear for generations. And denying that fact will only perpetuate systemic racism and white supremacy.

“The President has directed me to ensure that Federal agencies cease and desist from using taxpayer dollars to fund these divisive, un-American propaganda training sessions,” Trump’s White House Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought said. “Accordingly, to that end, the Office of Management and Budget will shortly issue more detailed guidance on implementing the President’s directive. In the meantime, all agencies are directed to begin to identify all contracts or other agency spending related to any training on “critical race theory,” “white privilege,” or any other training or propaganda effort that teaches or suggests either (1) that the United States is an inherently racist or evil country or (2) that any race or ethnicity is inherently racist or evil. In addition, all agencies should begin to identify all available avenues within the law to cancel any such contracts and/or to divert Federal dollars away from these unAmerican propaganda training sessions.”

Critical race theory does not teach that America is evil. But there’s no doubt that systemic racism exists, no matter how hard Trump and his racist supporters deny it.

Trump went on to gloat about the order on Twitter.

Because of this order, the federal government could return to the days when people of color were openly discriminated against and denied jobs they are qualified to hold. It’s a setback in the fight against white supremacy and systemic racism, and the anti-racism training should be immediately reinstated by the next president. At this point, Trump might as well publicly put a white hood over his head because he just did white supremacists a solid.
