For the first time, a currently serving US Attorney openly criticized Attorney General Bill Barr, his politicization of the Department of Justice, along with his nefarious efforts to protect President Donald Trump.

From the moment Barr took over the DOJ he has worked to undermine the rule of law and use the department to shield Trump, even going so far as to try to take over the defamation lawsuit filed against Trump by a woman who credibly claims he raped her.

Barr also shielded Trump from the damning Mueller report by ignoring his obstruction of justice during the Russia investigation and hiding key parts of the probe. In addition, Barr has sought to help Trump’s friends escape justice.

If that’s not enough, Barr is also helping Trump discredit vote by mail, which has been a safe and secure voting method since the Civil War, and made the coronavirus pandemic worse by claiming that social distancing, stay at home, and mask mandates somehow violate the Constitution.

During a speech delivered last week at Hillsdale College, Barr defended his actions while criticizing the federal prosecutors working at the DOJ, an attack that drew a rebuke from Assistant US Attorney for the District of Massachusetts James D. Herbert published by The Boston Globe.

“Many former federal prosecutors have spoken out against Attorney General William Barr, while current federal prosecutors have understandably remained silent,” Herbert began. “The attorney general’s comments at Hillsdale College, however, compel me to speak out as well. While I am a federal prosecutor, I am writing to express my own views, clearly not those of the department, on a matter that should concern all citizens: the unprecedented politicization of the office of the attorney general.”

“The attorney general acts as though his job is to serve only the political interests of Donald J. Trump,” Herbert continued. “This is a dangerous abuse of power. From his misleading summary of the Mueller Report, to his selective intervention in cases against political allies of the president, to his accusation that victims such as George Floyd are being used as mere “props” by those calling for racial justice, to his baseless claims about mail-in ballots, William Barr has done the president’s bidding at every turn.”

“For 30 years I have been proud to say I work for the Department of Justice, but the current attorney general has brought shame on the department he purports to lead,” Herbert concluded.

Barr has proven himself unfit for the office he holds since day one. The Department of Justice was never supposed to be the president’s personal legal team hell-bent on persecuting the president’s critics and political opponents. But that’s what Barr has turned the DOJ into, delegitimizing it in the process.
