After House Democrats passed two bill that would strengthen the nation’s gun control laws this week, GOP congressman Clay Higgins (LA) announced that he opposes the legislation because the act of murder is found in the Bible.

NPR notes that one the bills advanced by the House would require background checks on all gun sales or transfers and also address the “Charleston loophole” which “which made it possible for Dylann Roof, the white supremacist who killed nine people at a historically black church in Charleston, S.C., in 2015, to purchase a handgun even though he should have been barred from purchasing one. The measure lengthens the review period for background checks from three days to up to 20.”

Even though polls show that 90 percent of Americans support tougher gun control Congressman Higgins used the Bible to try and suggest that the legislation is somehow unnecessary because Cain killed Abel in the Old Testament:

“That laws designed to restrict Second Amendment rights and freedoms are about a veil to conceal the violence of man born since Adam, firstborn son of Adam killed his brother, in a violent rage. I’m rather certain he did not use a firearm. The Second Amendment protections that we have as American citizens ‘shall not be infringed.’ Remember these words, and that they are born of a nation that recognized our service to our Lord.”

The Bible and the Second Amendment? That’s one hell of a combination. And even the Supreme Court has said there are limits to the “rights” granted by the Second Amendment. For example, you can’t own a machine gun or a fully automatic weapon.

Before Rep. Higgins gets up and starts preaching, he should probably bother to understand the documents he’s referring to. God isn’t fond of liars.
