Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) got called out on Sunday by Fox host Mike Wallace for his hypocrisy on opposing the American Rescue Plan which gave $1,400 cash payments to Americans even though the Arkansas Republican had gladly voted for two such packages when Donald Trump was in the White House.

According to Cotton, the reason he opposed the most recent package from the Biden administration is because “prisoners” could get relief checks.

However, Wallace quickly reminded Cotton that the Trump financial relief packages also allowed that:

“But Senator, under two previous COVID relief bills that you supported and voted for and that President Trump signed, prisoners also got checks in those bills.”

Rather than admit he was indeed being a hypocrite, Cotton replied:

“That was obviously never Congress’s intent. The Trump administration, the IRS and the Treasury Department did not send checks to prisoners. Liberal advocacy groups sued to try to force that. A liberal judge said they had to.

“This month was the first time we had a simple up or down vote on whether those checks should go to prisoners. And the simple fact is that every Democrat voted to keep sending checks to prisoners.”

Well if a judge had already ruled that such payments have to go to all Americans, what choice did Democrats have but to include the same provisions as had been in the Trump legislation? If a federal judge rules something, it’s usually a good idea to do whatever he or she says or you’ll be in contempt of court and could be jailed for failing to comply. If Sen. Cotton feels so strongly about the Biden relief package, why didn’t he immediately take the matter to court and demand another judge rule on the matter? Probably because he’d rather try and make it a political issue since he knows the Biden relief plan is overwhelmingly popular with American voters.

The GOP has become the Party of Hypocrisy, and with everything they do, they prove just how completely out of touch they are with the vast majority of people in this country.
