Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) is already auditioning to replace Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) as the number three Republican in House leadership by throwing a Twitter tantrum.

House Republicans are planning to oust Cheney from her leadership position because she refuses to support disgraced former President Donald Trump’s election lies. To replace her, the GOP is apparently looking to elevate Stefanik, who has a history of sucking up to Trump.

The move is especially infuriating since House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has refused to punish Republicans who have committed real offenses. For example, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) is embroiled in a sex trafficking investigation and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) continues to make incendiary remarks, including personal attacks on McCarthy. Yet McCarthy ignores their vile behavior while seeking to punish Cheney just for speaking the truth.

The optics certainly are not good considering Republicans are punishing a woman for not kissing Trump’s ring. That will not play well among suburban women voters. But Republicans are hoping to soften the blow by picking Stefanik to replace Cheney, and that’s already off to an embarrassing start because Stefanik threw a hissy fit on Twitter Thursday that revealed her ignorance of the Constitution.

The Constitution protects free speech from being violated by the government, not a private company like Twitter. Twitter has the power to decide who can use its platform and who can’t. That’s why Trump is permanently banned. As for Stefanik’s staffer, her account has already been reinstated because the suspension was a mistake.

Twitter users mocked Stefanik and schooled her.

Clearly, Republicans prefer petulant toddlers as their leaders instead of adults.
