According to Fox News host Tucker Carlson, the history of Thanksgiving used to be taught in American schools, but now when the subject is broached, teachers try to “shame children for their American heritage.” Wait…what?! It’s June and Fox is already trying to manufacture a fake War on Thanksgiving? Did they run out of material for their other favorite holiday “war,” the War on Christmas? Here. See for yourself:
“I know that when they teach the children about Thanksgiving they ask them what could’ve been done differently on Thanksgiving which strikes me as a way to shame children for their American heritage” pic.twitter.com/X0GdiwkwOy

What Tucker failed to mention, of course, is the shameful history of the United States when it comes to the treatment of Native Americans, who were massacred, forced onto reservations, and systematically marginalized even though this was their country long before the settlers arrived. It didn’t take long before Carlson and his network got heavily mocked on Twitter:
Yes, Thanksgiving. A holiday not nationally celebrated until the Civil War. There is way too much unironic stupidity to unpack here. https://t.co/OQuGPyN2hy

Imagine being so insecure in your identity that you won’t allow accurate history to be taught to your children because they might find out some white people did some bad things in the past. https://t.co/Emc3QZpHdT

American Heritage, pfft. People came over from England, spread disease to the Native Americans that killed thousands. She thinks that is American as Apple Pie (which originated in England too in the 1300s!) 🤣🤣🤣🤣

“Hate the country” is Newspeak for taking stock of history and owning up to the atrocities that really happened. Instead of worshipping our ancestors, maybe we should simply look at them as human beings, and acknowledge their fuckups? There is no shame in facing up to reality.

We could have behaved like the visitors that we were and not have stolen the land from the indigenous people that were here already. You could teach your children that! It’s the American Indians heritage, we are immigrants.

I have a feeling her kid is going to end up feeling a lot more shame about their mom going on this show than they are after learning European settlers weren’t super nice to the natives when they got here hundreds of years ago
