Juneteenth is now a national holiday thanks to the Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, but RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel tried to give Republicans all the credit, which simply did not fly.

Juneteenth is the day in which former President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that freed the slaves in the South during the Civil War. Now, Juneteenth is a national holiday because Congress passed a bill making it so and President Joe Biden signed it into law.

Declaring Juneteenth a national holiday is long past due and most Republicans did vote for the bill in both the House and Senate, but McDaniel is pretending that Juneteenth is a Republican achievement that only Republicans deserve credit for passing.

The problem the that 14 House Republicans voted against making Juneteenth a national holiday and many conservatives had a complete meltdown after the bill passed.

Republicans appear to want to use Juneteenth to claim they aren’t racist even though they continue to deny systemic racism, support police shootings of unarmed black people, and are still passing Jim Crow voter suppression laws.

In fact, many Republicans have tried to defend slavery as a good thing this year. In 2021. Nearly 180 years after the Civil War ended.

Americans took McDaniel to the woodshed.

Make no mistake, most Republicans in Congress only voted to make Juneteenth a national holiday because they want to fool voters into thinking the GOP isn’t racist. But Republicans are very racist and must be purged from every level and branch of government. Because as long as people of color are discriminated against and blocked from voting true freedom and justice are denied.
