House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is so desperate to undermine the 1/6 Select Committee that he is claiming that Donald Trump has already been cleared of inciting insurrection.

McCarthy is currently freaking out because the committee is looking into his phone records from that day when he spoke to Trump at least once as a mob of Trump supporters violently stormed the Capitol with the intent of overthrowing democracy and assassinating lawmakers.

He has pushed Trump’s election lies and he is now declaring that Trump has been found innocent of any wrongdoing on January 6th.

“The FBI has investigated this,” McCarthy claimed according to CNN. “The Senate had bipartisan committees come back. And you know what they’ve found — that there’s no involvement. But this is purely political in how Nancy Pelosi has handled this.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) assembled a bipartisan committee. It’s McCarthy who refused to appoint other Republicans because two of his choices were rejected due to their involvement in the attack on the Capitol and their desire to sabotage the committee.

The committee fired back at McCarthy in a statement.

(McCarthy) has suggested, based on an anonymous report, that the Department of Justice has concluded that Donald Trump did not cause, incite, or provoke the violence on January 6th. When this anonymous report was first published, the Select Committee queried the Executive Branch agencies and congressional committees involved in the investigation. We’ve received answers and briefings from the relevant entities, and it’s been made clear to us that reports of such a conclusion are baseless.

In fact, Trump has not officially been cleared. He was impeached for inciting the insurrection, with a majority of senators voting to convict him. The only reason why the Senate failed to convict is because most Republicans ignored the evidence and were going to vote to protect Trump no matter what, resulting in less than the 67 votes required to convict.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) even admitted that Trump is not off the hook legally and that he is absolutely “responsible” for the insurrection.

As the 1/6 Select Committee continues investigating the insurrection, it’s only going to get worse for both Trump and McCarthy. Trump incited the insurrection. The question is did McCarthy know in advance that the insurrection would occur and did he help plan it?
