Republican 2024 presidential wannabe Nikki Haley predictably came to Donald Trump’s defense on Monday by criticizing former Vice President Mike Pence on Fox News.
Pence stunningly rebuked Trump during a speech to the right-wing Federalist Society in response to Trump’s claim that he could have overturned the election while presiding over the Senate on January 6, 2021.
“There are those in our party who believe that as the presiding officer over the joint session of Congress, I possessed unilateral authority to reject Electoral College votes. And I heard this week that President Trump said I had the right to ‘overturn the election,'” Pence said.
“President Trump is wrong. I had no right to overturn the election,” Pence continued. “The presidency belongs to the American people, and the American people alone. Frankly, there is almost no idea more un-American than the notion that any one person could choose the American president.”
Indeed, Pence is correct. The Constitution only says the electoral votes are counted and certified. It does not give the vice-president the power to reject electors or send them back to the states.
Despite Pence doing the right thing, Haley criticized him on Fox News.
“Mike Pence is a good man. He’s an honest man. I think he did what he thought was right on that day. But I will always say, I’m not a fan of Republicans going against Republicans,” she said.
So, Pence was just supposed to keep his mouth shut and not push back against Trump’s lies? Is that where Haley seriously stands? Her remarks just so happen to follow Trump’s own statement attacking Pence, which makes it certainly appear that Haley is being a Trump sycophant in her continuing desperation for support from the conservative base. Of course, Haley didn’t criticize the RNC for censuring Reps. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) and Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), which is a more significant case of Republicans attacking Republicans. And let’s not forget that Trump frequently attacks Republicans.
Americans were not forgiving on Twitter.
Nikki Haley: Duty, honor, country? Nah. Party first. https://t.co/fvGQN00wD6

Republicans censured Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger for upholding the constitution, but Nikki Haley is whining about Republicans attacking one another.

What I appreciate about Nikki Haley is how consistent she’s been in forcefully voicing this principle, especially when Donald Trump was attacking Repub….hahahahahahahahahahah https://t.co/lc8c9T2Iwr

But Nikki Haley is a fan of Republicans going after a Republican VP with a noose. https://t.co/icztHsInCx

Nikki Haley criticized Mike Pence for criticizing Donald Trump and said, “I’m not a fan of Republicans going against Republicans.” Yes, she said that in defense of Donald Trump. Irony died seconds later.

Nikki Haley would’ve done exactly what Donald Trump told her to do on January 6th https://t.co/iyySUyR1bg

Nikki Haley once condemned the January 6th Capitol insurrection. Now she’s totally on board with Trump’s election lies and effort to cover up his role in the plot to overthrow democracy. She’s pathetic.
